Frailty Support Volunteer

The Warrington and Halton area, like most in the UK, has an ever aging population. As we age some individuals become frail and develop a whole host of complex conditions that require medical interventions. Unfortunately this treatment isn't always provided in the best environment for the patient and can lead to distress - especially in areas such as A&E where it can be noisy and busy. Warrington and Halton Hospitals are looking to do something different. By thinking differently about how we treat frail patients we are hoping we can support their safe journey home without unnecessary hospital stays.

To do this the Trust is opening a Frailty Assessment Unit. Here patients are seen by a range of professionals from nurses and doctors to pharmacists and social workers, to assess their needs in order to arrange a safe and supported journey home while providing all the knowledge and treatment they need to manage their conditions.

In this role volunteers will be asked to support and guide patients and their families from A&E, reassure patients in a calming manner to avoid any potential distress, and explain what will happen while the patient is in FAU. Other duties will be at the request of the specialist team and might include activities such as making drinks for patients and families, and collecting medication from pharmacy. This is a pilot scheme running for 8 weeks which may be extended if successful.

Interested volunteers will be invited to an open day in the first week of April and will also need to attend patient manual handling training by the 4th April 2018, this is provided by the Trust.

**This role will provide an exciting opportunity to learn about frailty and support patients/families with this condition. Patient moving and handling training will be provided.

Volunteers may be asked to Courtesy Call patients who have been discharged from the unit. Script and support will be provided.
