Ward Assistant- Warrington Stroke Ward B14
Patients can be on the Ward for up to 6 weeks or more while they recuperate from a Stroke. This can be a long stay for patients and can also be very lonely at times. Volunteers will contribute by breaking these long days up through engagement of conversation and day activities.
Volunteers will provide social support to patients and help with the relaying of information between patients and staff to help relieve what can be a stressful time for a patient.
Volunteers can offer timely support to patients to ensure they are having the opportunity to do their therapy exercises e.g cognitive-such as puzzles
Some responsibilities include:
•Support patients with their therapy exercises as directed by qualified therapists
•Engage those with communication difficulties in social communication as guided by speech and language therapists
•To take nominated patients off the ward in a wheelchair for social activities eg visiting the shop/café or garden
•Greet and welcome patients when they arrive at the ward, department or clinic and signpost to the correct room if required

It was well organised and the staff were friendly.
Left on Monday 28th August 2017 for What Matters To Me - Conversation Facilitator (Warrington)
This was the inaugural session, attended by staff, board members, governors, staff and volunteers. We learned a lot from our first stab at it.
I am definitely up for helping at future ones, not only to re-engage with patients and visitors but also, to put this learning into practice.
I think the form needs reviewing to make the questions more user-friendly.
